Tension exists between Afro-Guyanese, who are descended from Africans brought over between the 17th and 19th centuries, and Indo-Guyanese, descendants of South Asian laborers brought from India in the 19th century. There were a number of instances of discrimination against Indo-Guyanese during the PNC'S RULE.
